Crashing Into the Moon

Posted by Jim at August 30th, 2006

Just for what it’s worth, a European lunar orbiter will crash into the moon on Satarday night at 10:41 pm PDT (Sunday, 1:41 am Eastern?). The area it crashes into will be darkness at impact. If we’re lucky, backyard telescopes might be able to view it.

Cool, eh?

Rate Your Geekiness…

Posted by Jim at July 28th, 2006

I ran across a test that allows a person to rate their geekiness relative to others who take the test. Does this improve my life? I’m not sure.

That being said, one of these days I ought to write one of these online surveys. As someone who did a masters that included significant amounts of training in survey design and analysis, I can’t read one of these things without critiquing them the whole way through.

I am nerdier than 90% of all people. Are you nerdier? Click here to find out!

Why Do I Do This?

Posted by Jim at July 28th, 2006

Even though this has been out for a little while, here’s a link to David Hasselhoff’s most recent music video Jump In My Car.

Yet More David Hasselhoff

Posted by Jim at July 2nd, 2006

During the past year, I’ve somehow done multiple posts related to David Hasselhoff, former star of Knight Rider and Baywatch.

Thus, despite the fact that it really doesn’t have enormous significance to me, I feel the urge to pass along an article sent to me by Alert Reader Dave Bosch.

It appears that David Hasselhoff has had to undergo surgery due to a freak accident with a chandelier while shaving.

Ozone Hole May Be Closing

Posted by Jim at May 26th, 2006

It appears that the ozone hole may be closing. At any rate, the ozone doesn’t appear to be being depleted any more. They’re not completely sure why, but I’m not complaining.

Mentos and Diet Coke

Posted by Jim at May 4th, 2006

You may have read something by now about putting mentos in Diet Coke and having the Coke squirt out of the bottle. Fortunately for all of us Rob Malda (alias CmdrTaco of Slashdot) has tried it and videotaped it.

Incidentally he’s not alone in this. This one in particular should win some kind of award for greatest height achieved with this one as a close runner up.

This page, for example, attempts to use it in a classroom setting. Oh. Also NPR seems to have gotten into the act.

So, if anyone’s got Mentos, Diet Coke and some time Friday night, I’ve got a driveway…

National Hairball Awareness Day

Posted by Jim at April 28th, 2006

It turns out that April 28 is National Hairball Awareness Day.

I don’t have any kind of special observance planned. We’ll find out what my cats have in mind. To be honest though, I think that they celebrate this one all year round.

Huh. Celebrity Wife Beating Synchronicity

Posted by Jim at March 11th, 2006

Before you read the rest of this, you might want to read this comic *

I’m not a great lover of Yanni or David Hasselhoff’s music, but I haven’t any great dislike for them personally. Thus news that both of them are under suspicion of domestic abuse is pretty strange. Funny to find these sort of charges against people who perform soft, inoffensive music. Not that I seriously expect music to offer a window into the soul of the performer, but if we were talking about people whose music was known to contain violent themes, it would seem less odd.

Oh well.

* Yeah, the comic is kind of offensive. Sorry.
