Employment Ads

Owing to the fact that I’d like a fulltime job, I’ve been looking through the “Jobs” section of the Grand Rapids Press lately.
Typically I look through the computer related ads, then search for IT positions that should have been placed in the computer section (but weren’t), and finally I look for positions related to my statistics/social science background. This means that I typically end up reading through all the ads.
As I went, I discovered an ad that said, “Manage a Concept!” That sounded interesting, if rather abstract. I read further.
As it turned out, the local Hooters was hiring managers.
I’m still not precisely sure what concept a person would be managing at Hooters, but I suspect it has something to do with boobs.
Say what you like about managing a Hooter’s, I bet it doesn’t involve hawking creationism ( http://www.answersingenesis.org/ ) or supporting gigantic evil banking concerns ( http://www.bankofamerica.com ). There have been many times in my life I’d have been thrilled to hold my head up high and say proudly that I manage a Hooter’s.

Well, you have a point there, but on the other hand, I suspect that some feminists would argue that Hooters is essentially a large corporation founded on the exploitation of women. One that reinforces the idea that women are sexual objects and promotes a rather unrealistic female body image as well.
Of course, you’ll probably also find feminists that don’t find anything wrong with Hooters.
I’m inclined to think that culturally speaking, the US is a bit screwed up on the subject of sex/gender/the human body. It’s a bit hard to separate the themes into individual parts.
Hooters is more a manifestation of this than a problem in and of itself.
